Boston native Devon L. Jordan a.k.a. Max Millz has strived to get the recognition he deserves as a Boston based rapper. He grew up in Dorchester, MA in a single parent home. Born to Stephanie Jordan a young single mother at the age of 17, and the oldest of three, Devon’s road to success didn’t come so easy. Here’s how it starts…
The Birth
While attending the Woodrow Wilson Middle School, in Dorchester, MA he started to run the streets, and engage in street activity.
Many young teenagers that are born into single parent homes find the streets as their true solace. While the streets were calling, Devon was accepted into a music and arts academy, but would soon find out his family life was falling apart. Stephanie Jordan was struggling financially to make ends meet, and going through a divorce with his step father. Devon endured rough nights with no heat, lights, phone or hot water. He recalls having eggs for breakfast, and dinner many days through the week. As a result of that, Devon soon found street hustling as his new “education”. With the thought of excelling in musical arts looming over his head, he knew he had to get some money, and get it quick. Education became secondary and making money became the priority. With his mother stressing and barely making ends meet, the risk of getting caught on the street didn’t matter anymore. “Money is fast and bills are being paid, I don’t do this to say I did this.” That was his answer for anyone who was concerned. Experiencing things that shouldn’t of been exposed to someone his age, he often states he wouldn’t wish this on his worst enemy but it made him a stronger person. He did what he had to do to make sure his family could survive. Juggling school, hustling, and a job were all in a day’s work.
The Struggle
At the same time, Devon realized that the street life was deadly, and was the wrong road to travel. Visiting friends in the hospital several different times a year began to make him wonder if he would be next. With that, he pondered about his future goals, and realized music was the best form of therapy. Having encounters with the law, and stacking up on charges, he decided to transition what he had gone through on the streets to paper. His best friend was in and out of jail for most of his teenage years, and he knew that wasn’t where he wanted to end up.
While crafting his writing skills he began to write short stories, and poems to voice his inner emotions prior to rhyming. Upon hearing Hip Hop rapper Nas's album "It Was Written" he transitioned his poetry into rhymes. In 1996 at the age of eleven he started rapping with his best friend by freestyling in street ciphers, rapping amongst friends, and family. This motivated Devon to take music seriously. The feedback was incredible. Some of the major music influences in his life range from names such as Jay-Z, Biggie, Nas, Big L., Mase, Kool G. Rap, Run-DMC, Rakim, CL Smooth, Pete Rock, Wu Tang and OutKast to name a few.
Furthermore, with such great feedback from the public, Devon signed to an independent label called FGU Entertainment, where he crafted his sound, and perfected his flow. However, every rapper has its up’s, and downs in the business especially when you’re not fully aware of how things work. Devon stated, “FGU was more of an opportunity to learn the business rather than an opportunity to take his music to the next level.” As creative differences played a role and an album in limbo he decided to take his career into his own hands.
The Victory
With every triumph there is always a success story. Devon is now signed to a label called Split Tha Water Inc. which he owns, and operates with partner Jason "Wess" Walrond. The company was founded in 2003, and is now starting to gain worldwide recognition. Furthermore, his future endeavors include signing new artists, Split The Water Publishing, a clothing line, real estate, and other business ventures. Devon also wants to give back to his community by organizing fundraisers for at risk youth growing up in single parent homes. He believes that if he can change one person’s life out of a million he’s done his job. I present to you Max Millz!
